National Malay Gamelan Competition 2011

National Malay Gamelan Competition 2011 was held at the hall of Al Muktafi Billah Shah, University Sultan Zainal Abidin, Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu. This competition was held on 29th to 30th of October 2011 and 17 Gamelan groups from all over Malaysia has joined.

These groups are Kumpulan Gamelan SaGa (University Sultan Zainal Abidin), Kumpulan Gamelan Sanggar Kirana (University Teknologi Petronas), UPNM Gamelan Group (University Pertahanan Negara), Kumpulan BAYU (University Malaysia Sarawak), UTP Gamelan Group (University Teknologi Petronas), Kumpulan Gema Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA), Kumpulan Gamelan Kuala Lumpur, Kumpulan Gamelan MASenidaya, Kumpulan Gamelan Sari (Universiti Teknologi Mara Terengganu), Kumpulan Gamelan Asuhan Seni 1 (Istana Budaya), Kumpulan Gamelan Asuhan Seni 2 (Istana Budaya), Kumpulan Gamelan Atika Seni (University Sains Malaysia), Kumpulan Gamelan Simfoni Lokananta (Universiti Teknologi Mara Dungun), Kumpulan Gamelan Citra Nusantara (University Pertahanan Negara), Kumpulan Gamelan Indera Kayangan Perlis, Kumpulan Gamelan Pelita ASWARA and Kumpulan Gamelan KONGA (University Sultan Zainal Abidin).

There are two categories which are traditional Malay Gamelan and the other one is contemporary or creative. For traditional Malay Gamelan category, each group must performed two traditional Gamelan songs which are instrumental and the other is vocal. For contemporary or creative category, each group must performed two Malay Gamelan songs whether instrumental or vocal and one contemporary or creative Gamelan music which each group can use other traditional musical instruments other than the basic traditional Malay Gamelan instruments (http://t-terengganu.blogspot.com/2011/10/gamelan-of-terengganu.html).

The winner for traditional Malay Gamelan songs goes to Kumpulan Asuhan Seni 1 from Istana Budaya while Kumpulan Gamelan KONGA UNISZA has won the contemporary or creative category. Terengganu's Gamelan

In 1811, an exquisite dance performance, accompanied by an ensemble of brass instruments, was brought from the Riau-Lingga court to enliven a royal wedding which took place in Pekan, Pahang. Since then, this performing art, now known as the Malay gamelan, had developed into an exclusive entertainment for royal pleasure in the Pahang and Terengganu courts. Between 1914 and 1942, the love and effort devoted by the royal couple of Terengganu, Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Syah and Tengku Ampuan Mariam, had carried the Malay gamelan into its glory days.
